PRIDE

Premiered on IGTV (@maadisoncraig) December 15th, 2020

In 1978 Gilbert Baker created the first version of the modern pride flag. His symbol of pride for the gay community, this 8 stripe flag, first flew on June 25th 1978 at San Fransico Gay Freedom Day Parade. Each colour carries a meaning.

Pink - Sex, Red - Life, Orange - Healing, Yellow - Sunlight, Green - Nature, Turquoise - Magic, Indigo - Serenity, Violet - Spirit.

I wanted to craft this “recital” around the concept of these themes in the hands of a variety of LGBTQ+ identifying artists. Having one singer for each theme allows for a different voice, quite literally, to tell a facet of queer experience. With the current shift to digital in our industry I also wanted to explore taking away the expectation of what the visual component of a recital is- i.e. singer and piano. I crafted these videos to be reminiscent of vibe-y TikTok and Instagram clips to take away some of the stiffness of the art form, as well as try to mirror the queerness of the themes.
